Tarpan

Restoring Vision Through Ancient Wisdom

2 min read

In Ayurveda, the eyes are considered the windows to the soul, governed by Alochaka Pitta, a sub-dosha of Pitta responsible for visual perception. Tarpan (or Netra Tarpana) is a revered Ayurvedic therapy that focuses on nourishing and rejuvenating the eyes using medicated ghee. At Ayuceutical, this age-old technique is applied under expert guidance, restoring eye health naturally, safely, and effectively.

Led by seasoned Ayurvedic physicians Dr. Vikas Saroch and Dr. Neetika, Tarpan therapy at Ayuceutical is meticulously curated using high-quality, herb-infused ghee and personalized protocols that address both preventive and therapeutic ophthalmic needs.

Tarpan is not just a relaxing eye procedure—it is a powerful therapeutic modality with multifaceted benefits:

  • Improves vision clarity and prevents progressive deterioration

  • Relieves eye strain caused by screen exposure or prolonged reading

  • Alleviates dryness, burning, and irritation

  • Reduces dark circles and puffiness around the eyes

  • Strengthens ocular nerves and muscles

  • Manages conditions such as computer vision syndrome, dry eye syndrome, early-stage cataracts, and myopia

Benefits

Modern research supports several mechanisms of action behind Tarpan therapy:

  • Lipophilic absorption: Medicated ghee, rich in fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E), gets absorbed through conjunctival and corneal tissues, enhancing eye lubrication and tissue repair.

  • Anti-inflammatory action: Herbs like Triphala and Yashtimadhu reduce ocular inflammation and oxidative stress.

  • Neuroprotective effect: Tarpan helps in protecting the optic nerves and improving neurosensory pathways involved in vision.

Scientific studies have shown improvement in symptoms of dry eye syndrome and reduction in corneal epithelial defects following regular Netra Tarpana sessions.

Procedure

The therapy involves retaining medicated ghee over the eyes using a specially prepared dough ring:

  1. Preparation: The patient lies down comfortably in a calm environment. A dough ring (made from black gram flour) is placed around the eyes to form a reservoir.

  2. Application of Ghee: Lukewarm, purified medicated ghee (often containing Triphala, Yashtimadhu, or Shatavari) is gently poured into the ring until the eyes are completely submerged.

  3. Soaking Phase: The patient keeps their eyes open and closed intermittently, allowing the ghee to penetrate deep into the ocular tissues.

  4. Duration: The therapy generally lasts 15–30 minutes per session.

  5. Post-Care: The ghee is carefully removed, and mild fomentation may be applied to enhance absorption. Patients are advised to rest the eyes and avoid screen exposure for a few hours.
